The unsettling part is how ordinary rooms become harder to enter once the letters start filling in what happened there. Nothing needs to jump at the screen; oppressive music, grisly written accounts, and the growing sense of isolation do enough damage on their own. With the full version unlocked, the later story, puzzles, and remaining areas can all be played through, though some clues and tools are easy to miss. The controls can be fussy and crashes are possible, so save manually and save often.
