Getting dumped into the colony with next to nothing still makes for a wonderfully miserable introduction. Diego offers a bit of guidance, but nobody else seems especially concerned about your survival. Wander into someone's house uninvited and the owner will soon remind you where you stand. The full game is unlocked in this version, so you can follow the nameless prisoner's journey through to its conclusion. Combat takes some getting used to, particularly when a half-decent sword feels impossibly far away. Yet returning to an old hunting ground with proper gear and a few hard-earned skills has a charm that modern RPGs rarely manage to reproduce.
